Experiencing Hair Loss: What You Need to Know About the Norwood Scale

ScalpMasters RI • March 18, 2022

For most men, male pattern baldness is a condition that they are genetically predisposed to. They may have watched their fathers or grandfathers gradually lose their hair, and they may have an aching sense of dread knowing that their turn is coming.

What many men do not realize is that there is a hair scale that they can use to track their balding progress. The Norwood Hair Scale is commonly used by hair loss treatment centers and scalp micropigmentation clinics in order to determine what type of treatment option will work best for the individual patient.

What is the Norwood Hair Scale?

The Norwood Scale is a classification system that is commonly used by physicians and hair loss treatment specialists in order to diagnose pattern baldness and determine the stage of baldness that an individual is in. This scale outlines the typical progression that takes place for men with pattern baldness. There are seven distinct stages of hair loss, and the Norwood Hair Scale allows treatment providers to provide a diagnosis and track the treatment progress. For many, the Norwood Scale gives them a baseline for where they at and a goal for where they want to get to.

Understanding the Stages of Male Pattern Baldness

According to the Norwood Hair Scale, there are seven stages of pattern baldness. These seven stages are:

  • Stage 1 — This is the earliest possible stage of pattern baldness, and during this stage, hair loss has not begun. It is often called the control stage by practitioners and technicians.
  • Stage 2 — This is when you may begin to see the first signs of hair loss. During this stage, you will find that hair begins to thin around the temples.
  • Stage 3 — During this stage, the first signs of clinical pattern baldness are apparent. At this point, you will likely see a noticeable receding hairline, which may be in a U, V or M shape depending on your family history. You may also be noticing a small bald spot on your scalp.
  • Stage 4 — In the fourth stage, hair loss will progress at a significant rate. You will show significant signs of baldness on the vertex, and the bald spot on the scalp will likely grow in size and scope.
  • Stage 5 — This stage is very similar to stage four, except for the fact that the hair that is left on the scalp is likely much thinner than it was at the previous stage.
  • Stage 6 — As you near the final stages of pattern baldness, you will find that you do not have much hair left on the top of your head. In this stage, there is generally only hair along the sides of your head.
  • Stage 7 — This is the most advanced stage of pattern baldness, and there is often very little hair left. If you do have hair, it will be very sparse.

Do You Have Pattern Baldness?

If you are beginning to notice the signs or symptoms of hair loss, you may be wondering if you have pattern baldness. You are at higher risk of this condition if you have a family history of it. When you start to see that your hair is thinning, you may want to consult a physician, a dermatologist or a hair loss treatment specialist in order to receive a proper diagnosis.

What are the Best Treatment Options for Hair Loss?

There are several treatment options for hair loss associated with pattern baldness, including hair transplant surgery and prescription medication. However, the best treatment for hair loss is scalp micropigmentation. This is a non-surgical treatment option that provides immediate results. Commonly known as a hairline tattoo, this procedure requires an experienced technician to work with a micro needle in order to deposit pigment into your scalp. The goal is to create the look of a freshly-grown hair follicle. Scalp micropigmentation can be used to add density to your hair if you are in the first several stages of the Norwood Hair Scale, or it can be used to give you the look of a fresh buzz cut if you are in the advanced stages of pattern baldness.

Find Out if Scalp Micropigmentation is Right for You
