Does the shininess of your bald head make you feel self-conscious?
Anyone with a short haircut or bald spots understands the dilemma caused by bald head shine. For those who go the route of scalp micropigmentation to have a fuller looking head of hair, the shiny bald head can still be a problem. You can nearly eliminate the problem by cleaning your head consistently, and finding products that are anti shine for bald head issues.
The biggest cause of a shiny scalp is the buildup of oil. Your entire body produces oil naturally, and your scalp is no different. Oil is produced in sebaceous glands, and you have them all over the place. Sebaceous glands are commonly found next to hair follicles, and this is what causes your hair to get oily when it hasn't been washed for some time. Even when the hair follicle dies off, the sebaceous gland will continue to produce oil. If the oil remains on your scalp, this results in a bald shiny head.
You don't have control over how much oil your sebaceous glands produce, and it is different from person to person. The oil, or sebum, helps to keep your skin moisturized on your body. You can't stop oil production, but there are ways to help to reduce the amount of sebum on your scalp if you have shiny scalp.
Sebaceous glands take care of creating lipids, and make up about 90% of the lipids on the surface of your skin. There are several types of lipids found in the sebum that comes from your sebaceous glands. You can find fatty acids, wax esters, cholesterol, triglycerides and squalene in sebum, and too much sebum leads to dandruff or acne for individuals. When someone is bald, the hair does not absorb the sebum. This causes too much oil to be on the scalp, and will cause the head to shine.
Just because there isn't any hair on a bald head, does not mean that cleaning the scalp can be ignored. When you have a bald head, you still have to give your scalp a good scrub when you take a shower. You can use a shampoo on your scalp that helps to control oil, even when there isn't any hair on it. Matting products can reduce the shine caused by excessive oil on your scalp. Pay attention that you don't use products that are too drying for your scalp, as this can cause your skin to become dry and cracked. When the scalp becomes too dry, your sebaceous glands will go into overdrive trying to correct the problem.
Exercise is going to cause you to have a shiny head after you finish your workout. Mixing sweat with too much oil on your head will result in a bald shiny head if you don't wipe the sweat off. If you know you are going to be working out, have something to wipe your head off when you start to sweat. If you have recently had scalp micropigmentation done to improve the look of your bald head, look over the instructions from your technician on how to deal with sweat and the micropigmentation.
There are a number of products available to help you reduce the shine on your scalp, without causing it to be dry. Anti shine shampoos and moisturizers can eliminate the look of your shiny head, and give you the matted look you are going for.
